The film stars Bruce Willis as James Cole, a convict from a post-apocalyptic future sent back in time to prevent a deadly virus from wiping out humanity. In the year 2035, the world’s surface is uninhabitable after a catastrophic virus killed 99% of the human population in 1996. The survivors live underground, and scientists believe that a mysterious organization called the Army of the 12 Monkeys was responsible for releasing the virus. To find a cure, they send prisoners back in time to gather information. James Cole, a convicted criminal, is chosen for the mission and is sent back to 1996, but due to a malfunction, he arrives in 1990 instead. In 1990, Cole is arrested and placed in a mental institution, where he meets Dr. Kathryn Railly (Madeleine Stowe), a psychiatrist fascinated by his vivid descriptions of the future and Jeffrey Goines (Brad Pitt), an eccentric and unstable patient with an intense hatred for corporate greed—and whose wealthy father, Dr. Leland Goines, is a top virologist. Cole rants about the upcoming apocalypse, leading everyone to believe he is delusional. He is eventually pulled back to 2035, where the scientists are unsure if he is making progress. Cole is sent back again, this time correctly landing in 1996. He tracks down Dr. Railly, who starts to believe his warnings after uncovering eerie similarities between his claims and past events. They suspect that Jeffrey Goines, now a free man and the leader of an underground radical group, may be behind the release of the virus. As they investigate, they discover that the Army of the 12 Monkeys is not responsible for the virus—they merely freed zoo animals as an act of rebellion. The real culprit is Dr. Peters, an assistant to Jeffrey’s father, who plans to spread the virus globally. Cole and Railly rush to stop Dr. Peters at the airport, but security intervenes. As a child, Cole had recurring nightmares of witnessing a man get shot at an airport. In a devastating twist, he realizes he is witnessing his own death—his younger self is among the onlookers, unknowingly watching his future unfold. Dr. Peters boards a plane, carrying vials of the virus, ensuring the apocalypse is inevitable. Meanwhile, one of the scientists from 2035 is also on board, suggesting the future may still have some control over events. 12 Monkeys is a haunting tale of time loops, fate, and human error, where history is set in stone, and every attempt to change it only ensures its inevitability. With James Cole trapped in a cycle he can never escape, the film leaves audiences questioning free will, destiny, and the true nature of time travel.
