Cook's Cook Book Author: OHATA, [Susumi Ichitaro] Title: Cook's Cook Book Publication: San Francisco, California: Hinomoto Book Co, 1912 Description: 9.5 x 6.5", quarter brown leather with blue cloth, gilt spine titles, silver illustrations of forks and spoons to spine, [1100] pp, paginated in Japanese, illustrations within text. Text in Japanese. Leather worn and dry, three inch crack to upper portion of rear joint. A cookbook intended to introduce Japanese cooks in the United States to western recipes. We could find little about the author, other than the appearance in the 1910 census of an "A.S. Ohata" living in San Francisco and employed as a book writer, listing 1887 as his year of arrival in the United States. The book begins with a glossary of kitchen terms and ingredients, followed by a 20 page illustrated glossary of pots, pans, and kitchen tools. This is followed by numerous recipes, including East Indian Dressing, Egyptian Mayonnaise, Japanese Dressing, Okra Succotash, Tennessee Grits Bread, roast antelope, buffalo, roast bear, and several of the author's own dishes "a l' Ohata", including "Chicken Pie a'l' Ohata." The book concludes with a 60 page index. Five in OCLC. Seller ID: 10261 Subject: Cookery Caroliniana Rare Books Antiquarian and collectible books, primitives and antiques. The book arrived just as advertised. It was shrink wrapped in a box perfectly protected and on a rainy day. I was concerned about it getting wet, but it did not. In fact, it is in exactly the same condition as it was in the advertisement. The seller was excellent to deal with and I will not hesitate to do business with them again if they ever have anything I am interested in.

Ordered on Friday, received by Wednesday (USPS Media Mail). Very impressed with quick shipping from SC to PA (tracking kept pushing out delivery date; received earlier than expected). Packaged securely and bubble-wrapped. The book is as described and in very good condition--made an offer and received item at a great price.
